AGM Minutes 2018
Present: Charlotte, Emma, James, Matt and Melissa.
Positives for 2017
The leadership team felt 2017 was a positive year. The group has retained its community ‘feel’ and many members have felt empowered to lead ‘Run With friends’ events throughout the week running alongside the Monday School Gates event and main Wednesday night session. A majority of our members appear to be running more often and undertaking greater distances. This intimates that members’ confidence in their abilities is improving. The group have also worked well within the community. Matt, George, James and Jer supported the Male C25K Sportspound initiative in January 2017 and have been asked to organise it again this year (this time supported by Mark Welsford and Ian Browne). The Fliers supported the Keep Bristol Warm appeal in February, marshalled at the Bristol Half Marathon and visited care homes at Christmas to sing carols.
New Run Leaders?
There are currently five leaders (Charlotte, Emma, James, Melissa and Matt). It was felt that there is no need for any more leaders at present. Although Jer has relinquished his leadership responsibilities, current numbers would suggest that any more leaders are (currently) not required. However, this may well change if we have another successful C25K programme in the summer or if we start a ‘Stanbridge Striders’ group (see below). Please note that If any member should obtain a Lirf of their own accord, the Fliers will acknowledge this and use them accordingly.
Wednesday Sessions – Striking a balance
As much as possible, we try and provide varied running sessions on a Wednesday night. The needs of the group is diverse and our sessions have to reflect this. Some members thoroughly enjoy social running and others seek a more rigorous training programme. Both are extremely valid and we therefore have to strike a healthy balance. The social 5ks will still appear as will the #runandtalk and Out & Back events. From time to time they will be interspersed with hill, tempo, progression and fartlek sessions. Ideally, if members are training for specific races, they will opt for these sessions.
Run With Friends
One of the successes of the group has been the growth in confidence of runners which in turn has empowered them to kindly organise Run With Friends events. Their support has been invaluable and we are lucky to have such proactive members. These runs need to entitled ‘Run With Friends’ as they are not official Fliers sessions (and therefore negating insurance protection).
Melissa (one of the original Fliers founding leaders) has quite kindly started speed sessions on a Sunday (after a successful C25k programme in the autumn of last year). Uptake has been variable over the winter months and it is hoped that more members will join her in the spring/summer. Other leaders will start to attend March onwards.
We promote the School Gates group heavily in the September (new intake). Perhaps present at the Reception evening meetings?
The idea put forward for another C25K in the summer months (possibly on a Wednesday night). This has yet to be confirmed.
We aim to continue our community work and replicate the events we supported in 2017. As a group we also intend to raise funds for the junior parkrun at Page Park and marshal more at Pomphrey Hill.
We are keen to become Association of Running Clubs affiliated and receive some of the benefits this entails (http://www.runningclubs.org.uk/). Affiliation costs £100+ which we can fund for a year and then ask our members to maintain this status the following year (approx. £2-£4). We would also like to purchase a Fliers banner and high vis tops. Leaders will investigate the possibility of funding a Stanbridge Striders leader for those members of the community that would like to walk/hike.
IT (website/social media)
The website is updated regularly. Every member has a responsibility to be vigilant for posts that are deemed unsavoury and in bad taste. Our group is community based and linked to a school therefore social media posts need to be sensitive to this.
Feedback From Members
All feedback (positive and negative) is appreciated. We welcome everybody at the Fliers and the leaders try their very best to provide (free) varied and interesting sessions. If for any reason a member does not wish to take part in the sessions on offer, attendance is not compulsory.
Social Events 2018
This year we intend to continue with our away days in the summer:
Severn Bridge Run
Leigh Woods Run
Snuff Mills Run/Social
We will also be adding:
Only Fools & Horses Run
Cotswolds Way Run
Green Man Keynsham Run
We also like the idea of having an organised BBQ, curry night and Race Night. Many thanks to Claire Jackway for organising a superb Christmas event!
